Myofascial Release

At The Health Suite, we offer myofascial release – a type of physical therapy used to release tension and ease pain

Myofascial v2

About

Myofascial release is a highly interactive stretching technique aimed at releasing physically restricted muscles in order to facilitate the relaxation of tense tissues.

The technique is very slow, painless and is designed to gently pull the fascia (a thin casing of connective tissue) away from the muscle to increase circulation. Think massage in very slow motion!

The belief is that without movement, the fascia ‘furs up’ and sticks to the muscle with small fibres similar to candy floss. These stuck fibres restrict blood flow thus preventing effective movement of the muscle group. Fascia has nerve endings which means that this ‘furring’ can actually cause more pain.

Treatment

The goal of treatment using myofascial release is to facilitate movement patterns, through effective stretching and continuous postural assessment. Progress is measured by improved postural symmetry, a reduction in trigger points (points of pain), increased fluidity and range of movement.

Myofascial release can benefit most people with chronic musculoskeletal pain, myofascial pain syndrome and fibromyalgia. It has also been a very successful technique for people who suffer from chronic headaches, as massaging tightened muscles around the neck increases blood flow to the area.
