Skin tags are small, benign growths of skin that commonly appear in areas where the skin folds, such as the neck, underarms, eyelids, groin, and under the breasts. They are usually harmless but can be removed for cosmetic or comfort reasons.
Skin tags can be removed through various methods, including cryotherapy (freezing), excision (cutting), electrocautery (burning), or ligation (tying off). These procedures are quick and often performed in a dermatologist's office.
Skin tag removal is usually minimally painful. Local anaesthesia or numbing creams are often applied before the procedure to reduce discomfort. The amount of pain depends on the size and location of the skin tag.
Once a skin tag is removed, it typically does not grow back. However, new skin tags can develop in the same or different areas, as they are more likely to form in people who are prone to them.
Insurance may cover skin tag removal if the procedure is deemed medically necessary, such as if the skin tag is causing irritation, bleeding, or discomfort. If it is removed for cosmetic reasons, it may not be covered.
Skin tag removal is generally safe, but there is a slight risk of infection, bleeding, or scarring. Your dermatologist will provide post-care instructions to minimize these risks and ensure proper healing.
While there are over-the-counter kits for skin tag removal, it is safer to have them removed by a professional to avoid infection, scarring, or incorrect removal. Home treatments may also take longer or be less effective.
Skin tag removal is usually a quick procedure that can take anywhere from a few minutes to half an hour, depending on the number and size of the skin tags being removed.
Skin tags often form due to friction from skin rubbing against skin or clothing, hormonal changes, obesity, or genetic factors. They are also more common in people with diabetes or metabolic syndrome.
No, skin tags are typically harmless and do not need to be removed unless they cause discomfort, irritation, or cosmetic concerns. Many people choose to remove them for aesthetic reasons or if they are in areas prone to friction.
