A Hayfever Allergy Blood Test is a diagnostic test that measures the level of specific antibodies (IgE) in the blood to identify allergic reactions to common triggers, such as pollen, dust mites, or animal dander.
The test checks for the presence of immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies, which the immune system produces in response to allergens. Elevated IgE levels indicate an allergic reaction.
People who experience persistent hayfever symptoms like sneezing, itchy eyes, runny nose, or congestion, especially if over-the-counter treatments are ineffective, may benefit from this test.
The test can detect a wide range of environmental allergens, such as pollen from trees, grasses, weeds, as well as dust mites, mold spores, and pet dander.
A healthcare professional will draw a small blood sample from your arm, which is then sent to a laboratory for analysis. The test typically takes just a few minutes.
No, fasting is not required before a Hayfever Allergy Blood Test. You can eat and drink normally before the test.
Results usually take a few days to a week, depending on the lab processing the test. Your healthcare provider will contact you once the results are available.
The test involves a standard blood draw, which may cause mild discomfort or a brief sting at the puncture site, but it is generally not painful.
Yes, unlike skin prick tests, antihistamines do not affect the results of a Hayfever Allergy Blood Test, so there’s no need to stop taking them prior to the test.
If the test indicates that you have hayfever-related allergies, your healthcare provider will help develop a treatment plan, which may include avoiding allergens, medication, or allergy shots (immunotherapy).
