Media Coverage: GP Shares Four Natural Remedies to Help Ease Hay Fever Symptoms

As pollen levels rise during the spring and summer months, millions of hay fever sufferers are turning to simple, natural strategies to help manage symptoms.

Dr Dominic Greenyer, GP and Director at The Health Suite Leicester, says hay fever is caused by an allergic reaction to airborne pollen that affects the nose, eyes, throat and airways — often leading to sneezing, congestion, fatigue and irritation during peak season.

Hay fever is essentially the immune system reacting to pollen as though it is harmful,”

Dr Greenyer explains.

While there is no cure, symptoms can often be managed effectively with a combination of approaches.”

He highlights four natural remedies that may help ease discomfort:

1. Local honey

Some believe that consuming local honey may help the body build a gradual tolerance to local pollen exposure over time.

The idea is that trace amounts of pollen may help the immune system adapt, though he notes evidence is mixed.

2. Vaseline barrier

Applying a small amount of petroleum jelly around the nostrils may help trap pollen particles before they enter the nasal passages.

It can act as a simple physical barrier, reducing how much pollen is inhaled,”

he adds.

3. Camomile tea

Camomile tea is often used for its soothing properties and may have mild anti-inflammatory effects that help ease irritation.

Dr Greenyer suggests it may be particularly helpful when combined with local honey.

4. Saline nasal rinses

Saline solutions can help flush allergens, dust and mucus from the nasal passages, making breathing easier.

Nasal irrigation can be very effective at physically clearing irritants from the airway,”

he explains.

He also advises that individuals with more severe symptoms should seek medical advice, as treatments such as antihistamines, steroid nasal sprays, or immunotherapy may be required.

If symptoms are significantly affecting daily life, it’s important to speak to a GP about stronger treatment options,”

Dr Greenyer adds.
