Media Coverage: Data Reveals Which Age Group in Leicestershire Is Most Affected by Common Mental Health Conditions
New data from Leicestershire has revealed significant differences in the prevalence of common mental health disorders across age groups, with young women aged 16–24 showing the highest rates in the county.
According to the figures, 26% of females aged 16–24 have experienced a common mental health disorder — the highest of any female age group — and notably higher than their male counterparts, where prevalence stands at just over 9%.
At the other end of the scale, adults aged over 75 show the lowest recorded rates, with 10% of women and 5% of men affected.
Dr Asiya Maula, GP and Director at The Health Suite Leicester, says the data reflects a growing and concerning trend in younger populations.
Poor mental health in young people is on the rise,”
Dr Maula explains.
This can be influenced by a combination of social media pressures, academic stress, home environments, and financial or work-related challenges.”
She emphasises the importance of early recognition of warning signs, noting that changes in behaviour, mood, motivation, and social interaction can all indicate underlying mental health struggles.
Key warning signs in young people may include:
- Changes in mood, behaviour or personality
- Difficulty with daily tasks or reduced motivation
- Withdrawal from friends, family or social activities
- Uncharacteristic or risk-taking behaviour
Dr Maula stresses that these signs should not automatically be assumed to indicate a mental health condition, but persistent changes should prompt supportive conversations.
It’s important that young people feel heard and not judged,” she adds. “Normalising conversations around mental health can help reduce stigma and encourage earlier support.”
She also highlights the role of families and schools in early intervention, encouraging open dialogue, reassurance, and access to appropriate support services when needed.
Health experts continue to warn that untreated mental health difficulties can worsen over time, making early identification and support essential for long-term wellbeing.
