Media Coverage: GP Warns Norovirus Symptoms Are Often Mistaken for Other Common Illnesses
A GP has warned that norovirus/winter bug is frequently misidentified in its early stages, as symptoms can closely resemble other common seasonal illnesses.
Dr Asiya Maula, GP and functional medicine specialist at The Health Suite Leicester, explains that many patients initially dismiss the infection as a mild stomach upset or food-related illness.
Norovirus often comes on suddenly, but the early symptoms can overlap with food poisoning, flu-like viruses, or general gastrointestinal upset,”
Dr Maula says.
She adds that this can delay people taking appropriate precautions to prevent spread:
Because it can look like a routine stomach bug at first, people may not realise how contagious it is until symptoms progress.”
Norovirus typically causes sudden vomiting and diarrhoea, often alongside stomach cramps, fatigue, and mild fever, and spreads rapidly through close contact or contaminated surfaces.
Dr Maula stresses the importance of early awareness and hygiene measures:
If symptoms come on quickly and involve vomiting and diarrhoea together, it’s important to assume norovirus and act accordingly — rest, hydration, and strict hygiene are key.”
Health experts continue to remind the public that symptoms usually resolve within a few days, but the virus can spread easily in homes, schools, and workplaces if precautions are not followed.
