Media Coverage: Dr Dominic Greenyer Highlights Meningitis B Risk for Millions Born Before 2015
Millions of people in the UK may be unknowingly unprotected against meningitis B, as the vaccine was only introduced into the NHS childhood programme in 2015. Recent coverage has brought renewed attention to the risks, particularly following a concerning outbreak among young adults.
Dr Dominic Greenyer, GP and Director at The Health Suite Leicester, warns that many older children, teenagers, and adults may not realise they lack protection against this strain:
“Many people assume they’re fully vaccinated because they had meningitis jabs at school, but these did not cover meningitis B,” he explains.
Before 2015, routine NHS vaccinations focused on other strains (A, C, W, and Y), leaving a large portion of the population without immunity to MenB.
Meningitis B, while rare, can develop rapidly and become life-threatening. It causes inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and can lead to severe complications, including sepsis.
Dr Greenyer emphasises the importance of awareness and proactive action:
“Those who were not eligible for the vaccine as children may wish to consider private vaccination, particularly if they are in higher-risk settings such as universities or shared accommodation.”
The recent outbreak has also prompted increased demand for private vaccination, with experts calling for greater public awareness and potential expansion of access.
Key takeaway: Many adults in the UK may still be vulnerable to meningitis B — and understanding your vaccination status could be crucial in protecting your health.
