Media Coverage: Experts Highlight “Fibremaxxing” Trend as a Simple Way to Improve Gut Health and Long-Term Wellness
A growing social media wellness trend known as “fibremaxxing” is encouraging people to increase their daily intake of fibre-rich foods in a bid to improve digestion, gut health and overall wellbeing.
The approach, which has gained traction on platforms like TikTok, focuses on consistently reaching — or exceeding — the recommended 30g of dietary fibre per day through whole foods such as vegetables, beans, oats, seeds and fruits.
Research suggests that the majority of people in the UK still fall short of this target, consuming closer to 20g per day on average.
Health experts say the trend reflects a broader shift towards preventative nutrition and gut health awareness.
Dr Asiya Maula, GP and Director at The Health Suite Leicester, says fibremaxxing is less about restriction and more about nourishment.
Fibremaxxing is a positive trend, one that focuses on adding more to your life, rather than taking anything away or making life harder,””
Dr Maula explains.
She adds that the approach encourages sustainable dietary improvements rather than extreme dieting.
It’s about eating more vegetables, beans, oats and whole foods — not cutting everything out — which makes it far more sustainable,”
Nutrition experts note that fibre plays a key role in digestive health, helping to support regular bowel movements, reduce bloating, and promote a healthier gut microbiome. It is also linked to longer-term benefits such as improved metabolic health and reduced risk of chronic disease.
However, professionals also advise a gradual approach when increasing fibre intake, as sudden dietary changes can lead to bloating or discomfort. Adequate hydration is also considered essential.
Dr Maula emphasises that balance is key, noting that fibremaxxing works best as part of a wider healthy lifestyle rather than a strict dietary rule.
Fibremaxxing isn’t about extremes. It’s about feeding your body properly and letting appetite and energy regulate themselves naturally,”
As interest in gut health continues to grow, fibremaxxing is increasingly being viewed by clinicians and nutritionists as a simple, accessible way to improve everyday health outcomes through small, consistent dietary changes.
