Media Coverage: GP Warns Cancer Referrals for Under-50s Are at Record High

Cancer referrals for patients under 50 are surging, according to Dr Asiya Maula, GP at The Health Suite Leicester, who says what was once rare has become a weekly occurrence in her practice.

“I’m referring under-50s for cancer investigations far more regularly than I ever used to,” Dr Maula explained. “Ten or 20 years ago this was uncommon. Now, it’s something I’m seeing week in, week out.”

Younger adults, particularly those in their 30s and 40s, are increasingly presenting with symptoms of cancers that were historically associated with older age groups. Dr Maula highlighted the rise of bowel, breast, thyroid, and certain blood cancers in these age brackets.

Experts warn that improved diagnostics alone cannot explain the trend. Dr Maula points to multiple overlapping lifestyle and environmental factors:

  • Toxic exposures: Daily contact with chemicals from air pollution, plastics, cosmetics, and household products may accumulate over decades.

  • Hormonal disruption: Long-term exposure to plastics and pesticides may affect cell growth and division, potentially allowing abnormal cells to survive.

  • Diet and lifestyle: Ultra-processed foods, obesity, insulin resistance, and chronic inflammation are recognised risk factors for cancer.

“Our environments are far more chemically loaded than those of previous generations,” Dr Maula said. “Cancer rarely results from a single cause — it’s the cumulative effect of environment, diet, and lifestyle over decades. Persistent symptoms should always be taken seriously.”

Dr Maula emphasised that early recognition and urgent investigation are crucial, even for younger adults, to improve outcomes and potentially save lives.
