Many people with knee pain instinctively avoid certain movements, believing they may worsen joint damage. However, experts say this approach can sometimes do more harm than good.
Fatema Contractor, consultant osteopath and director at The Health Suite Leicester, explains that one commonly avoided activity may actually play a key role in improving knee strength and stability.
The knee joint relies heavily on the muscles around it for support. When people avoid movement out of fear of pain, those supporting muscles weaken, which can actually increase discomfort over time.”
She adds that controlled, progressive movement is often more beneficial than rest alone. Activities such as gentle strengthening exercises, walking, and guided resistance work can help improve joint stability and reduce stiffness.
We don’t want people pushing through severe pain, but equally, complete avoidance of movement can lead to reduced mobility and weaker joint support structures.”
Health experts widely agree that the knee responds well to appropriate, low-impact strengthening exercises, which can improve function and help manage symptoms associated with wear-and-tear conditions such as osteoarthritis.
However, specialists also caution that high-impact or poorly controlled movements may not be suitable for everyone, particularly those with existing joint conditions, and should be guided by a clinician.
The key message from practitioners is balance — maintaining safe, consistent movement while avoiding sudden overload or inactivity.
