Media Coverage: GP Warns People Not to Ignore Changing Moles as Early Skin Cancer Sign

Health experts are reminding the public to monitor skin changes carefully, as subtle changes in moles can sometimes indicate early signs of skin cancer.

Dr Dominic Greenyer, GP and Medical Director at The Health Suite Leicester, says early awareness is key, as many people underestimate the importance of small changes.

Any mole that changes in size, shape or colour should always be checked,”

Dr Greenyer explains.

It doesn’t necessarily mean cancer, but it is one of the earliest warning signs we take seriously in general practice.”

He adds that while most moles are harmless, the challenge is identifying those that begin to evolve over time.

Clinical guidance supports this approach, advising individuals to watch for asymmetry, irregular borders, multiple colours, bleeding, itching, or rapid growth — all potential warning signs that require medical assessment.

Dr Greenyer emphasises that early detection significantly improves outcomes.

We often see people present late because they assume a small change is nothing. In reality, early review makes a huge difference in treatment success.”

Health professionals continue to encourage regular self-checks of the skin and prompt GP review of any evolving lesions.
