- Have abnormal liver function tests
- Have type 2 diabetes, insulin resistance, or metabolic syndrome
- Are you overweight or centrally obese
- Consume alcohol regularly or previously consumed alcohol at higher levels
- Have chronic viral hepatitis
- Have a family history of liver disease
- Want a baseline or follow-up assessment of liver health
- Require reassurance following incidental blood test abnormalities
Many liver conditions are asymptomatic in early stages; non-invasive assessment allows earlier identification of risk.
What to Expect on the Day
Total appointment time: approximately 30–40 minutes
1. Preparation
Please fast for at least 3 hours prior to your appointment
2. Imaging
Ultrasound examination of the liver. Shear wave elastography performed during the same scan. Non-invasive, painless, and performed externally on the abdomen
3. Blood Tests
Taken during the same visit. No separate appointment required.
4. GP Follow-Up Consultation (15 minutes)
Explanation of imaging and blood results. (After the blood test's result is received - Not the same day of scanning) Discussion of clinical significance. Advice on lifestyle, monitoring, or further investigation where appropriate. Clear guidance on whether referral or follow-up is indicated.

Common Q&A about Liver Fibrosis Scan (Ultrasound Elastography) FibroScan Alternative
Our FAQ section is designed to address common questions you may have, from how our treatments work to what you can expect during and after your session.
Our team is always available to provide additional support if you need more personalised guidance, ensuring that you feel informed and confident every step of the way.
FibroScan® is a proprietary elastography device. This assessment uses ultrasound-based shear wave elastography, which provides an equivalent measurement of liver stiffness (fibrosis), alongside full diagnostic liver ultrasound, liver fat assessment, blood-based risk scoring, and GP interpretation. This offers a more comprehensive clinical evaluation than elastography alone.
This assessment can help identify or monitor:
- Fatty liver disease (NAFLD / MASLD)
- Liver fibrosis and advanced fibrosis
- Cirrhosis risk
- Liver changes related to metabolic syndrome, diabetes, or alcohol use
- It is commonly used to investigate abnormal liver blood tests or to assess long-term liver health risk.
No. The scan is completely non-invasive and painless. It uses external ultrasound only, with no needles, injections, radiation, or recovery time.
No GP referral is required. You can self-refer and book directly with The Health Suite.
The imaging component typically takes 15–20 minutes. Including blood tests and the GP follow-up consultation, the total appointment time is approximately 30–40 minutes.
Yes. You should fast for at least 3 hours before your appointment. This improves the accuracy of elastography and liver ultrasound measurements.
Elastography can identify advanced fibrosis and cirrhosis risk by measuring liver stiffness. While it does not replace biopsy where this is clinically indicated, it is widely used to screen, stage, and monitor liver disease non-invasively.
- Imaging findings are available immediately
- Blood test results are reviewed promptly
Your results are explained during a 15-minute GP follow-up consultation, where clinical significance and next steps are discussed clearly.
The Comprehensive Liver Elastography Assessment at The Health Suite costs £500.
This includes:
- Ultrasound-based shear wave elastography
- Full diagnostic liver ultrasound
- Liver fat assessment
- Blood tests (including FIB-4 calculation)
- 15-minute GP follow-up consultation
There are no hidden costs and no separate appointments required.
Yes. This assessment is suitable for:
- Initial diagnosis of fatty liver disease
- Monitoring progression or improvement over time
- Assessing response to lifestyle or medical interventions
It is commonly used for follow-up in patients with metabolic risk factors.

Symptom checker
If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, please book an appointment with us. Symptoms can vary from person to person and from condition to condition.A proper diagnosis can only be made through a thorough medical examination.
Our clinicians will carry out a full assessment to ensure an accurate diagnosis and appropriate care.
Do you have unexplained fatigue or tiredness?
Feeling persistently tired can be an early sign of liver stress or damage, even before liver blood tests are abnormal. A liver elastography scan can help check for early fibrosis.
Have you been diagnosed with fatty liver or abnormal liver blood tests?
Fatty liver (NAFLD/MASLD) and abnormal AST/ALT results suggest liver inflammation or risk of scarring — a fibrosis scan helps evaluate liver stiffness non‑invasively.
Do you have risk factors like type 2 diabetes, obesity, or high cholesterol?
These metabolic conditions are strongly linked to liver fat accumulation and fibrosis. Elastography can assess liver health before symptoms appear.
Do you drink alcohol regularly and worry about liver health?
Long‑term alcohol consumption can damage liver cells and cause fibrosis. A scan can detect early stiffness to guide lifestyle changes or treatment.
Have you had viral hepatitis (B or C)?
Chronic hepatitis infections can lead to scarring over time. A liver elastography scan helps monitor the fibrosis level and guide management.
Is there a family history of liver disease or liver cancer?
Genetic or inherited conditions can increase liver disease risk. Early scanning helps detect fibrosis or fat before it progresses.

Click below to view useful info on a few of the common conditions we treat:
Early Liver Fibrosis Detection
A liver fibrosis scan (ultrasound elastography) assesses liver stiffness — a marker of scarring — helping detect early signs of fibrosis before symptoms or complications develop.
Non‑Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD/MASLD)
This common condition involves excess fat in the liver, often linked to obesity, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome. Elastography helps grade fat and fibrosis to guide early intervention.
Alcohol‑Related Liver Damage
Regular or heavy alcohol use damages liver tissue over time. A fibrosis scan evaluates the degree of stiffness and helps tailor advice on lifestyle changes and medical monitoring.
Monitoring Viral Hepatitis Impact (B & C)
Chronic hepatitis infections can lead to progressive liver scarring. Ultrasound elastography provides a non‑invasive method to monitor fibrosis and support treatment decisions.
Unexplained Abnormal Liver Function Tests
When routine blood tests show liver enzyme changes without a clear cause, elastography adds deeper insight into structural changes like fat or early fibrosis.

Our clinicians manage a broad spectrum of conditions, and individual assessment allows us to tailor care beyond the examples listed. We encourage you to book a consultation to discuss your symptoms and appropriate treatment options.
