Pigmentation can appear on the face, neck, chest and hands as brown patches, sun spots, post-acne marks, melasma or simply areas that read darker than the skin around them. It’s one of the most-searched skin concerns — and one of the easiest to make worse with the wrong, over-aggressive treatment.

Not all pigmentation is the same

Sun exposure, hormones, pregnancy, the contraceptive pill, inflammation, old acne, injury and genetics can all drive it. Some sits superficially and lifts fairly readily; some — melasma in particular — sits deeper, is hormonally driven and behaves very differently. Darker skin tones are also more prone to post-inflammatory pigmentation, which is exactly why a one-size facial is the wrong answer.

Where pigmentation looks hormonal, we can look at that side of the picture too rather than treating the surface in isolation.
