Media Coverage: Dr Dominic Greenyer Discusses the Potential Brain Health Benefits of GLP-1 Weight Loss Medications
Dr Dominic Greenyer, GP and Director at The Health Suite, has contributed expert commentary to a national health feature exploring the emerging role of GLP-1 weight loss medications beyond obesity and diabetes management.
While GLP-1 therapies have become widely known for their effectiveness in supporting weight loss, Dr Greenyer highlighted growing research suggesting these medications may also play a role in promoting healthy ageing and protecting cognitive health.
“Weight-loss medications have been found to reduce the build-up of amyloid plaques, the sticky proteins linked to Alzheimer’s, while also supporting the survival of neurons. This may help slow the cognitive decline that so often comes with age.”
Dr Greenyer explained that scientists are increasingly investigating how GLP-1 medications interact with biological pathways associated with ageing and age-related disease.
One area of particular interest is the Nrf2 pathway, a key cellular defence mechanism that helps regulate antioxidant production, reduce inflammation and support cellular repair.
“GLP-1 therapies have been shown to support the activation of Nrf2, which may help explain why these weight-loss shots are now being studied for longevity and healthy ageing, rather than just for obesity and diabetes.”
He further noted that these treatments may help address some of the underlying processes associated with metabolic ageing, the gradual decline in how efficiently the body processes energy and nutrients over time.
“GLP-1 therapies could help tackle some of the root causes of metabolic ageing, which is why interest in their wider health benefits continues to grow.”
While the research remains ongoing, Dr Greenyer emphasised that the findings are encouraging and may expand our understanding of how GLP-1 medications can support long-term health.
Although not a substitute for healthy lifestyle habits, these therapies are increasingly being explored for their potential role in promoting healthy ageing, protecting brain function and reducing the risk of age-related disease.
Through his commentary, Dr Greenyer highlights the exciting scientific developments surrounding GLP-1 medications and their possible benefits beyond weight management.
