Understanding Seborrheic Keratosis: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment Options at The Health Suite
What is Seborrheic Keratosis?
Seborrheic keratosis is a common, non-cancerous skin growth that typically appears as a brown, black, or light tan lesion. These growths have a waxy, scaly, and slightly raised appearance, often mistaken for warts or even melanoma. They are most common in middle-aged and older adults and can appear on various parts of the body, including the face, chest, shoulders, and back.
While seborrheic keratosis is benign and does not pose any serious health risks, many people choose to remove it for cosmetic reasons or due to irritation from clothing and friction.
What Causes Seborrheic Keratosis?
The exact cause of seborrheic keratosis is unknown, but several factors are believed to contribute to its development:
- Ageing: The likelihood of developing seborrheic keratosis increases with age, typically after 40.
- Genetics: Family history plays a significant role, with many people developing these growths due to inherited factors.
- Sun Exposure: While not a direct cause, prolonged sun exposure may contribute to the development of seborrheic keratosis, as they frequently appear on sun-exposed areas of the skin.
- Skin Friction: Areas of the body that experience more friction, such as under the breasts or along the waistline, may be more prone to developing these growths.
Symptoms and Appearance of Seborrheic Keratosis
Seborrheic keratosis lesions can vary in size, shape, and colour, but they generally exhibit the following characteristics:
- Waxy, scaly, or rough surface
- Slightly raised and may appear “stuck on” the skin
- Colours ranging from light tan to dark brown or black
- Varying sizes, from a few millimetres to several centimetres
- Can appear in clusters or as isolated growths
