The sample is sent to a specialist laboratory where it is analysed for folate receptor alpha autoantibodies, which can interfere with the transport of folate into the brain.   3. FRAT Results Review & Follow-Up

    Once the laboratory results are available, you will have a follow-up consultation with your clinician to review the findings in detail.   4. Treatment Following a Positive FRAT Result

Treatment Following a Positive FRAT Result

If folate receptor antibodies are identified, the consultant paediatrician can initiate and prescribe appropriate medication, where clinically indicated.

This may include:

  • Prescription folate therapy (e.g. calcium folinate rather than standard folic acid)
  • Optimisation of supporting B-vitamins (B12, B6, riboflavin)

Follow-up appointments and medication costs

  1. First Follow-up

    To review the results and commence medication, where appropriate.

  2. Initial Monitoring

    Further reviews at approximately 6–8 weeks and 3 months after starting treatment, to assess response, tolerability and any required dose adjustments.

  3. Ongoing Care

    If the condition is stable and you wish to continue treatment, follow-up appointments will usually be required every 6 months.

  4. Discontinuation

    If there has been no meaningful improvement, treatment may be stopped following the 3-month review.

The cost of medication is not included in the consultation or follow-up appointment fees. Estimated medication costs are:
